Umbria is known
as the green hearth of Italy because of the abundance of woodlands and its
characteristic hilly landscape which remains largely unspoilt. It's just
among these hills that lie some of the most beautiful medieval towns in
Italy such as Gubbio, Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto,Todi, Spello. However, the
origin of the umbrian civilization are lost in the mists of time: one of
the earliest testimonies of such history are the "Tavole
Eugubine" (the Tablets of Gubbio, dating back to about 300 years
b.C.), perfectly preserved in the "Palazzo dei Consoli" (Palace of
Consuls) in Gubbio. Umbria, and Gubbio in particular, are considered
to be cornerstone areas for the settlement and development of the
Etruscan and Roman culture. The "Tavole Eugubine" give evidence of
the great importance of Gubbio (in ancient times called ikuvium)
during these eras and confirm the existence of a flourishing Etruscan
civilization. Two main works remain from the Roman era: the imposing
Roman Theatre and the perfectly preserved and (at the time)
futuristic Aqueduct, the length of which can be covered on foot.
However it's in the medieval age that Gubbio flourished, as proven by the
plethora of buildings dating back to this period, which make up its
historical centre. Such architecture is so well preserved that taking a
stroll along Gubbio's cobbled streets is like stepping back in time. One
of the most exciting Italian festivals also dates back to this time:
"La Festa dei Ceri" (The Ceri Festivals), which also provides the
symbol for the region of Umbria. The festival takes place every year on
May 15th and it's unique in its kind. It consists of a headlong race where
3 enormous wooden structures are carried by local men around the old town
and all the way up the mountain, originally for votive purposes, The race
ends on the top of the Mountain of St. Ubaldo in front of the
Basilica that bears his name.
